Japanese joints, Mafell LO55 router

And more...

If you're anything like myself, you will most likely appreciate Japanese joinery, with the beauty, and ingenuity associated with a lot of the joints.

Recently, i just got my hands on the above book (Japanese joinery) by Dorian Bracht, whom I've followed for several years on social media, and respect as a woodworker/furniture maker.

Many will know him through his YouTube joint venture videos, which i myself have watched.

Dorian released the book quite recently, and i think he's done a good job with it.

The book itself is of high quality, think lost art press quality, and your bang on the money.

The photos, again are of excellent quality, showing the beauty and ingenuity of the said joints, along with the simple sketches to complement the description.

The description of the joints are brief, but give you information to where the joints where/are used in Japanese houses, and temples, along with what forces the joints will typically take.

I appreciate the description, as i often wonder where such joints would be used. This also gives me some guidance, to what joints i could use in future work, and takes some of the guess work out of marking, and cutting the joints.

Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in Japanese joinery, and a good companion to Dorian's video's.

You can get the book here (Amazon affiliate link), or direct from Dorian (links on his Instagram profile), or at a good book retailer.

You can follow Dorian on Instagram here, and on his YouTube here.

Wood porn

This weeks visual candy is a beautiful stool, made by isana furniture. (Click the picture for more images of the stool).

Theres just something about paper cord, being weaved into wooden furniture, which seems (to me) to perfectly compliment each other.

Don't forget to check out his other beautiful furniture on Instagram!

What impressed me

The mafell LO55 router grabbed my attention, showcased by od form in an Instagram reel (above, click to watch on instagram).

It’s not often a power tool will grab my attention but, this one did!

Super quick bit change ✅

Base leg support ✅

Snap in centre piece ✅

30% reduced power with 1 button ✅

Routers have come a long way in the last 25 years!

Check the reel out, it looks to be a good router.

Woodwork ponder

What came first, the tail or the pin?

While i prefer to cut the tail first on my dovetails, many do not.

Even when more practical for marking out, with tight pins, i still do better with tails first.

Which do you cut first?
